Tele: Man charged after allegedly smashing five Katoomba police cars

A man has been charged with a slew of offences after allegedly smashing five police cars in the Blue Mountains.

Police say a 61-year-old man started damaging the cars outside Katoomba Police Station around 2.15pm on New Year’s Eve.

Police allege the man threw bricks and rocks at the five cars, smashing a windscreen and damaging windows and the body of the cars.

The man then allegedly walked into the police station and threw a large rock at the perspex screen protecting the front counter.

When police approached the man he allegedly became aggressive towards officers, who used pepper spray on the 61-year-old.

The man was arrested and charged with seven counts of destroy/damage property, affray, three counts of intimidate police, assault police and resist/hinder police.

The man, who lives in Leura, will face Parramatta Bail Court today after being refused bail.

Police have slammed the alleged attack on police cars, saying it stopped the police station from operating.

“New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest times of year for emergency services and the damaged sustained to these vehicles placed the whole community at risk,” said Blue Mountains Duty Officer Inspector Sean McWhirter.
