9 News: Predator Anthony Sampieri’s history ‘not checked’ after explicit phone calls, NSW court told


A court has heard a NSW police officer charged with failing to properly investigate sexual predator Anthony Sampieri less than two weeks before he raped a seven-year-old girl, didn’t check his criminal history when a fresh complaint was made.Senior constable Andrew Bruce is accused of neglecting his duties by not informing Corrective Services that Sampieri was making sexually explicit phone calls to a female real estate agent. 

Less than a fortnight after the phone calls were reported, Sampieri, who was on parole at the time, raped a seven-year-old girl in the bathroom of a Kogarah dance studio in southern Sydney.

Downing Local Court heard the police officer didn’t check Sampieri’s criminal record in the police database, despite there being a warning on his file.The 31-year-old officer door-knocked Sampieri and gave him a verbal warning but because the victim declined to make a statement no further action was taken.Sampieri is serving a life sentence for the rape.

The officer, who is suspended with pay, has pleaded not guilty.
