A state police detective who was instrumental in the investigation into a spate of fires in the Hunter Region has been recognised for her work.

Detective Senior Constable Natalie Burston was one of eight investigators who received a nod this week as part of the 15th annual State Crime Command Excellence Awards.

Detective Senior Constable Burston was part of Strike Force Kurla, which was established to investigate the circumstances surrounding suspicious bushfire activity in the Lake Macquarie area in late 2018 and early 2019.

As part of the Financial Crimes Squad, she established that a teenage boy had called to report a number of fires in that area in the period in question – the teenager was later charged over his alleged involvement in the blazes.

In a statement on Wednesday, the State Crime Command described the case as “challenging”, requiring “diligent and tenacious investigative and leadership skills”.

Detective Senior Constable Burston was acknowledged as Highly Commended at the awards ceremony.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crimes Squad, Cybercrimes Squad and Organised Crimes Squad were also recognised for their work in various cases across NSW.

Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith congratulated each award recipient for their devotion to their work and the wider community.

“Each of these detectives has displayed incredible passion for policing and protecting the people of NSW,” Assistant Commissioner Smith said.

“Their diligence, skill and strong commitment to their work have earned them the respect of their peers who nominated them for these awards, and they should be extremely proud of that.

“They are a credit to their commands and the NSW Police Force, and we acknowledged them for their resolve and tenacity in investigating some of the state’s most complex crimes.

“The State Crime Command has a reputation for conducting deliberate, systematic and highly-skilled investigations, and it’s through the ongoing dedication and leadership of our detectives that we continue to deliver such outstanding results.”
